Traumatic Event Systems 
 
The Traumatic Event Systems (TES) training course is a two-day course that will help participants to understand the theoretical foundation of the TES model. Participants will learn about how trauma affects human systems, the relationship between the TES model and Violence Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA). Special communication tools will also be learned in order to help affected youth, staff and communities deal with trauma.

Course Details:
As an integrated practice the Traumatic Events Systems (TES) Model of Trauma Response training focuses on four phases of assessment and intervention:
 
Phase I: Initial Response - Student System
Phase II: Comprehensive Strategic Assessment - School Adult System
Phase III: Community Intervention - Parent/Family System
Phase IV: Traumatic Aftermath: Preparing schools and communities for the process of recovery
 
Participants: Staff and community partners who support school safety and critical incident related matters including:
 
  • Principals, Vice Principals and individuals who play a role in site specific VTRA activation for their school/agency
  • Educators and school administrators according to school/district needs
  • Community partners who support threat risk assessment and violence prevention (e.g. RCMP, municipal police, child protection social worker, child and youth mental health workers)

*Please note: This training includes challenging topics and subject matter that may be a contextual trigger for individuals who have recently been exposed to traumatic incidents in their personal/professional capacity.
 
*Although haven taken the Basic VTRA course is helpful, it is not essential
 
Training Description: As a result of completing this training, participants should be able to:
  • Understand the theoretical foundation of the Traumatic Event Systems (TES) model
  • Recommend TES team composition
  • Understand trauma in Human Systems
  • Understand the relationship between the TES model and Violence Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA)
  • Apply Psychological First Aid
  • Learn which communication tools are most effective in a time of trauma
