Detailed Description:
Embark on a journey to experience lessons that are digital in nature, but promote collaboration instead of isolation, and curiosity instead of acceptance. Break away from direct instruction and empower students with resources that uncover curriculum using tasks that are contextual, visual and concrete to leverage the curiosity of our students.

Teachers will walk away with activities and resources to engage and empower their students the day they return to class. The goal of this session is to showcase the powerful combination of using a 3-act math framework and the philosophy of productive struggle to enhance student learning through contextual tasks and curiosity. We will present our philosophy while also modelling specific teacher moves as the audience takes on the role of the student.

The session will begin with showing a comparison between the exclusive use of explicit/direct instruction versus a balanced approach utilizing specific parts: contextual 3 act math tasks to promote inquiry, intuition and productive struggle; making connections to the conceptual understanding of big ideas across the curriculum; and consolidating concepts as we move towards building procedural fluency. Concepts will focus on solving proportions with extensions to linear relations.
