Detailed Description
It is time to pick up some S.T.E.A.M. in your classroom!  This summer workshop will bring together subject association specialists and K to Gr. 8 classroom teachers supporting each other in innovative strategies and creative new ideas to integrate Science & Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics in the elementary classroom, with considerations of an environmental and/or indigenous perspective. Come and share hands-on and authentic inquiry-based learning activities.
In this Summer Institute, participants will:
  • Explore how integrating different subjects helps students combine their mathematical, logical, scientific, linguistic, artistic, and social knowledge to improve the learning experience.
  • Share practical tips, resources, and strategies to integrate the arts with STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) curricula and other content areas in K to 8 classrooms.
  • Engage in hands-on activities that demonstrate a student-centred approach in order to deepen an understanding of how engaging in these activities increases students' knowledge, experience and understanding.
  • Explore frameworks for student-led inquiry and some specific tools that support inquiry in the elementary classroom.
  • Understand the value of Project Based Learning and how it can be integrated into daily curriculum delivery across the subject areas.
  • Devise inquiry tasks that address SSHG "big ideas”
  • Know how to activate the arts-based creative process via inquiry, collaboration, communication and critical thinking.
  • Be learning to naturally solve problems - both the problems presented by teachers and the issues students face every day - by using project-based learning principles from driving quest.
  • Learn how to incorporate Indigenous knowledge with Western views and create engaging STEAM activities that address an Indigenous framework.
  • Create engaging STEAM cross-curricular activities that increase student’s interests in the areas of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
  • Understand current environmental issues from scientific and indigenous perspectives and be able to implement these in open-ended inquiry experiences in their classrooms.
  • Be able to evaluate the level of success of STEAM integration, environmental issues, and indigenous perspective-taking in pre-existing resources and collaboratively develop their own open-ended inquiry experiences.
  • Learn how digital tools support effective teaching practices and share ideas on how to effectively use student devices to support learning.
  • Explore ways of making student thinking more visible using technology in a variety of STEAM activities.
  • Learn strategies to meet the needs of a variety of specialized learners across Science & Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics learning expectations.
  • Adapt curriculum expectations to make them as accessible as possible to all learners, including those who learn differently.
