Detailed Description:
What is deep learning anyway? In this session we will use the draft Ontario 21st Century/Global Competencies as the lens for creating student learning experiences that support deep learning. We will explore how leveraging digital tools can support students and teachers connecting with others, develop creativity, communication, citizenship, critical thinking and metacognition skills. Participants will start by identifying student and teacher needs in relation the 21st Century Competencies and then practice assessing and choosing digital tools to support their work before planning a deep learning experience for their upcoming classes. Time will be spent exploring a wide variety of digital tools that meet the needs identified by participants, in addition to tools that can support the assessment of deep learning experiences. Topics will include GAFE/0365, the VLE (D2L), Ministry licensed digital tools, web applications, digital portfolios, learning through inquiry, social media, blogging, online discussions and digital citizenship. Throughout the session teachers will be able to fine-tune their learning (focus in on the tools and strategies) to best suit their specific learning environment (1:1, BYOD, laptops, Chromebooks, iPads, etc.).

By the end of this Summer Institute, participants will know what deep learning is and be able to:
  • leverage digital tools (technology) to support the development of the 21st Century/Global Competencies and course expectations
  • self-assess the learning experiences (activities) they create for their students, looking for ways to support deep learning,
  • adapt previously created or create new deep learning experiences for students
