Lunch and Learn Technical Seminar
Wednesday, January 24th 12:00 (noon) – 2:30 pm
Sala San Marco, 215 Preston Street, Ottawa, Ontario
It seems fitting to kick off 2018 with a topic representing respectively the interrelationship of these classical elements and how they influence each other in the building of a Building Envelope.
The Elements of Astrology: Fire, Earth, Air & Water and how three of those elements work together in turning the building envelope into a Prevention Shield
Exterior wall assemblies must be able to protect a structure from fire and natural hazards associated with the local environment, including rain, hail, high winds and temperature extremes. They are required to limit fire spread from external fire risks (e.g. fire from adjacent buildings or vehicles), from ignition sources within the cavity (e.g. hot work, grinding sparks and electrical shorts) and from internal fire risks (e.g. presence of combustible materials, failure of electrical or mechanical equipment). Delivering the materials and design to manage these risks while managing labour time and costs continue to evolve.
Gaelan Kennedy McCormick, BBA is the Building Envelope Manager for Eastern Canada for Georgia-Pacific Canada. A graduate of Western University in London Ontario, Gaelan has spent 15 years specializing in the exterior cladding, wall assembly and design for building envelopes. Adding to this, eight years were spent working with gypsum with respect to fire design. He has worked and collaborated across Canada with all levels from design to application and will share with us the management and performance of the four control layers of the Building Enclosure; Water – Vapour – Air – Thermal with respect to code considereations while simultaneously demonstrating the value of new technology.
