Could the Grenfell Tower fire happen in Canada

The tragic fire that occurred in London, England in June 2017 was a shock and wake up call to architects and building engineers around the world.  Could this happen in Canada?  Judy will walk through the early information from the investigations into the Grenfell Tower fire and relate those findings to our building design practices in Canada.  Key elements of our Canadian Code requirements will be discussed, particularly with the intent to understand the interrelationships between the requirements for cladding, construction, continuity of fire separations, fire blocking, and materials.

Presenter
Judy Jeske, P.Eng. is a Principal and Vice President of Code, Life Safety and Security at Morrison Hershfield Limited.  She is a senior Code specialist and has been with Morrison Hershfield (MH) for more than 17 years.  Judy has over 30 years of experience providing expert advice on the application of Building and Fire Codes and fire and life safety Standards in association with the design of all types of building projects.  Judy works closely with design teams to apply creative Code solutions without compromising fire and life safety principles and performance.  She liaises with local Building Officials to facilitate their review and understanding of the proposed Code approach and fire and life safety philosophies for design projects.  Judy has extensive experience with assessment, renovations, redevelopment and expansion of significant heritage and historic buildings and properties as well as design and construction of new buildings including airports, museums, cultural centres including theatres and sports venues, hospitals, residential complexes and high profile buildings.
