Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course

23 May 2020

The Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) is an introductory course intended for all new restricted firearms users, as well as for those who wish to better familiarize themselves with the safe handling of restricted firearms.

Individuals under 18 years old may take this course purely for the purpose of educational awareness but are not permitted to participate in the examination process.  Minors must file a consent form signed by one parent or guardian before attending the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course.  A consent form is available at this link: Consent Form.

In order to qualify to apply for a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) with Restricted privileges, a minor who has taken this course for educational awareness must repeat the entire course and complete the examination after becoming 18 years old.

The course is designed to familiarize students with the safe, effective, and responsible handling of restricted firearms and ammunition.  The course covers the basic parts of a restricted firearm, proper loading and unloading of the restricted firearm, proper stances for discharging the restricted firearm, as well as safe storage and transportation of restricted firearms.

The course is structured to be a minimum of 8 hours of classroom instruction, using disabled restricted firearms and dummy ammunition for practical handling sessions.  No live ammunition or active firearms are permitted in the classroom and no live-firing is conducted.

All students will receive the opportunity at several points during the course to handle, load, and unload various restricted firearm actions, and will be instructed on how to safely handle these firearms with hands-on supervision from a qualified instructor.

This course will provide current information and safe handling practices for restricted firearms which will better prepare the student for the mandatory tests, both written and practical handling, should the successful graduate choose to apply for a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL).  Applicants for a PAL (Restricted) must have successfully passed the exams for both non-restricted firearms (CFSC) and restricted firearms (CRFSC).
